Permutation is a rearrangement of several parts combined to make a whole; a rearrangement not only of artistic mediums such as drawing, painting, writing and sculpture, but also of personal experiences and influences. It borrows from the steelyards that I was around as a child, an ongoing interest in typography and design, and the use and meaning of language. The chair structures act as stand-ins for the figure, a reevaluation of the figure so as to bring it into a more contemporary discussion. Coupled with the text, the chairs create a narrative or an ongoing dialogue by reacting through a figurative gesture to the text. The single, open-ended text based statements poetically play with the context and meaning of language, creating for the viewer a moment of pause and reflection.
